JUDGE GIVES HIS REASON FOR If

Giving reasons in the Court of Criminal Appeal why lie imposed a sentence of lb years’ ipeiial .servitude on lx-sillie Gosper for having .attempted to discharge a gun at a woman, Air Justice CJurtlewis said: “With regard to; the evilly disposed section of the community 1 consider it my duty not only to inspire fear, but in cases of crimes of violence to inspire terror. Many people have to live in congested areas where opportunities; occur tor the commission of outrages, often on children of both sexes who look to the judge for protection.” , . , Mr Justice Curlewrs remarked that it was significant that in recent years light sentences for brutal outrages had provoked "the tlmt a* croip of such crimes would follow. This had been borne out by events. Gosiper’s Uimpeail a>gxun6rt) tine sentence on the ground that the shooting was unintentional was adjourned.
