RATTLE IN STEERING.
; GREASE MAY CURE. 1 Continuous rattle arising from the I 1 ! steering gear-box whenever the car is ' ■ running on other than the smoothest ! j ' of ro 'idi-i may be caused by the use of 1 ' ; an unsuitable grade of lubricant, in co I 1 ; inn ton with .slackness due to wear, j ' (The latter nm,v have dravelopea between !-s I the “teeth” of the worm and worm j ■ ! wteel. in the bushings of the worm- j 1 wheo’. shaft, or - it may permit slight j end movement of that shaft. j 1 G rease is generally used in the steer- ! r ing gear-box. and in the ordinary j c
course is quite suitable so long as it ris not too stiff. But when slackness occurs at any ipoint it is advsable to use a very thin grease—ordinary motor grease. thinned down with gear oil or enginu oil. in fact. This semi-fluid tui br leant is better able to return readily between the parts that “chatter” after being squeezed out by the operation at. the sheering while the car is being manoeuvred. “Heavy” grease will not do fsa at such, points, as between the worm-wheel, bossi and the sides of the casing,. On dismantling steering gears it will frequently be found that these parts ace -try after thick grease has been used : but this is never the* case where a, lubricant will iu.st flow has been used. Inserting the latter instead of grease will cure an annoying steering rattle on many cars when there is 'no means oi adjustment to- counteract, wear, or no '■"nportunitv of utilising it with satirfacorv results.
