CROSSING KEEPER.
SPLITTING UP THE COST.
“,t is the most dangerous level crossing in the country,” declared Mr. A. C. Russell, chairman of the Waipukurau County Council, at a meeting of the Hawse’s Bay Highways Council i.i Napier, when the subject of the muchdiscussed Huataniwlia street railway crossing was advanced.
,t was reported that it" was estimated t.i cost £2lO annually to maintain a crossing keeper there to signal the appro;.cn of trains. Of this the Railway Department would pay half and the Alain Highways Board and the \\ aipukurau Borough Council the remainder in proportions of £63 and £42 on a £1 10s to £1 basis. Mr. Russell remarked that the Borough Coimril was circularising the adjoining counties-—Patangata, Waipukura.i. and \\ aipawa—to contribute £lO each to the cost, and expressed the lope that they would see their way to do so. It wotikl protect their ratepayers using the crossing. He stated that the Waipukurau County would make its contribution.
