MANAIA.

SCHOOL. COMMITTEE. The. monthly meeting of the Matnaia School Committee was held last night, when there were present Messrs A. J. Giaimlin (chair), IV A. Budge, G. Edwards, J. Oague, G. Butler, W. Vincent, and the Rev. R, Miller, A. Sadler.

The Minister of Agriculture wrote confirming his telegram to. the chairman regarding the grant-for additions to the cooking room, in order to provide additional room for the secondary classes. The Taranaki Ed nida tion Board advised that leave ol’ absence had been granted to Miss Bayly on account of illness.

Alrsi Robinson, secretary of the Manaia branch of the W.CLT.U., asked if the children were supplied with cocoa, during the winter months, stating that the members of the union would he prepared to provide cocoa and sugar for the children. In connection with dental treatment for children, the secretary of . the Taranaki Education Board forwarded a copy of -a letter- from the director of the division of dental hygiene, in which it was stated that he would be glad if the secretary would furnish the department with a list of the schools within a reasonable distance that could be treated if Mainaia; were made a. sub-base, and also the number on the rolls of each school. Mr Bridge, acting secretary, said this would be supplied. ' GENERAL. The question of playing football matches in'school hours was considered, members being divided on the matter. Some members were strongly in favour of giving the boys the chance of playing say on a Friday, because they were upholding the honour of the school, while, one member considered that the intellectual side of the school work was more important. The elate for the play-off match at Okaiawa, lias been fixed for Friday, August 10. The action of the headmaster in procuring a supply of fuel was confirmed.' ANOTFLERi PIONEER, PASSES. « The funeral of the late Air James Bourke, senr., took place on Wednesdav afternoon leaving the Catholic; Church . for the Alanaia cemetery early in the afternoon. Services were conducted by the Rev, Father O’Dwyer, who also held a requiem mass at 9a.m. The procession was one of the largest held at Alanaia, over 60 cars carrying friends from all parts of Taranaki, who were present to pay the last respect to one of the district pioneers. The procession was headed by the members of the Hibernian Society in regalia. Tho pall bearers were Alessrs B. AlcOarthy, E. Long senr. , T. AloPh,films, P. Bourke J. AlcCarty, senr., and J. A, G. Cosgrove. Alany beautiful wreaths were laid on the casket. BIRTHDAY SURPRISE. Over 50 friends paid a surprise visit to the residence of Air O. Jones at Oco last Friday night to pay their compliment to his mother Airs E. Jones, on her 71s,t birthday, also- Airs C. Jones, whose birthday was on the same date. A pleasant evening was spent in cards, vocal items and dancing. _ Birthday speeches were delivered, wishing the time honoured many happy returns and many gifts were presented. All- C. Jones .returned thanks and expressed the pleasure the gathering had afforded Airs Jones, senr., Airs Jones, junr., and himself. Tie evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “For They are jolly good, Fellows.V.
