An abnormal rise of the water in the Yangtsze gorges lias flooded vast areas on Loth the right and lett river banks and has drowned thousands.

Reports from Hankow state that the water rose twenty feet in a few hours in certain tributaries of the Yangtsze and sixtv-five feet in the gorges thenirseLes. Hundreds of people have been killed and their bodies are floating down-stream.

Many juniis were capsized, and thousands of the sailors were flung helplessly into the rushing waters. Three junks filled with conscripted coolies seized by the military at Hankow, and who were being transported to Honan, upset. Two thousand coolies roped together with their hands tied were drowned.
