A slight accident occurred during shunting operations at the Hawera railway yards yesterday afternoon about 4.30, when three trucks were derailed. A repair gang setl to work immediately and without much loss of time the trucks were replaced. At to-day’s meeting of the Waimatte West County Council the chairman (Mr E. Substantial 'bequests have boon made to the Hamilton Beautifying Society and the cathedral by Miss Annie McPherson, who died on Monday at the age of 78 (stated a Hamilton Presls Association message). She was the daughter of the late Caiptain James McPherson, of the 4tli' Waikato,s, who settled at Hamilton in IBG6. The amount bequeathed has not yet been announced.

The membership or the South Taranaki Automobile Association is fast nearing the thousand mark, and it is expected that tiie association’s objective will te reached next week. It is quite on the cards that the person who is fortunate enough to be the thousandth member to join up will be the recipient of a pleasant surprise. Mystery surrounds an accident which occurred on Sunday evening on the Mountain Road, in the direction of Ngaeye (says the Eltham “Argus”). Miss Margaret McDonald, who is employed iby Mr Rl. Lewis, baker, of Eltham, was proceeding towards Mr Scott’s residence at Ngaere, between 5.30 and 6 o’clock, and when about a mile from Eltham, she was found by a passing motorist, who took her to Mr Scott’s residence and departed before any information could be obtained. Miss McDonald was taken to Mount View Hospital, where it was found she had slight concussion. The name of the motorist and the circumstances under which she was found on the road fs a mystery. The Turuturu School Committee is holding another euchre party and dance on Friday, August 10. Mrs Dennett’s orchestra has been engaged, and a jolly time is assured l to all who attend.
