Armed police patrolled the streets from dawn and 3000 police and firemen anri-viiTg in motor lorries occupied strategic posts. Public services were suspended in order to fteniroh the town for Communists, who hid; in cafes and'bars' whither film gendarmes pursued them. The Mayor of lvry smacked a gendarme’s face and was promptly arrested and the apprehension of 500 communists followed. The garrison troops in Paris were detained in 'barracks in case of violence a-s the situation was regarded as a test, of strength between the police and the Communists. Fifty Red guards were arrested as they left a demonstration in Paris last night. The position later quietened.
