GREAT BRITAIN’S BUTTER.

THE SOURCE OF HER SUPPLIES. A statement of the British Ministry of Agriculture received by the Commonwealth Department of Alarkets, shows‘that more than half of the butter imported into Great Britain is supplied n.v two countries, Denmark and New Zealand, the former sending the larger proportion. In the last four earns imports of Danish butter have averaged 1,823,000 cwt. or nearly onethird of the total receipts from all sources, while ill 1927 her. contribution very nearly reached 2,000,000 cwt. New Zealand butter lias averaged 1,188,000 cwt., or a little more than one-fifth _oi the total. Australia comps third with an average of about 765,01 K) cwt., or 13 per cent, of the total, but Australian supplies show much wider variations than those from other sources, some 1,161,030 cwt. arriving in 1925, but only 489,000 cwt. last year. Argentina and the Irish Free State each supply about 500,000 cwt. annually, while the remaining sources send between them an average of nearly 1,000,000 cwt., and it is interesting to note that imports from these countries, although not at present forming a very material proportion of the total, appear to lie steadily rising. Alention may here be made of Russia, which sent 350,000 cwt. in 1927, against 283,000 cwt. in 1924; Finland, with 205,000 cwt., against 135,000 cwt.; Sweden, with 165,000 cwt., against 58,000 cwt.; and the Netherlands, with 170,000 cwt., against 92,000 cwt. On the othqr hand Canada, which supplied 131,000 cwt. in 1924, and 163,000 cwt. in the next year, sent 400 cwt. only in 1927.
