The visit to the Dominion of Sir John Russell, diitfeieitoT of the famous Botihiam.sted Experiment Steutioihi a.t Home:, and .director "designate of the Imperial -Soil Bureau, is a: significant sign of the itiimes. During the .past few years wc .have :hiad visits tfrom some of the leading authorities in various branches of industry and 'commerce. That of Sit Frank Heath, isceretary to the Department .of .Scientific and Industrial Research, will ibe readily recalled 1 , for it resulted in f.he esta'blisbrn'ent of a new Department here for the .purpose of finking up the Dominion with other parte .of the Empire, in the great campaign to. enlist science in the icaiuse of production. Then leading industrialiists have l visited the Dominion to study market conditions and o,ur peculiar requirements', and a member of the Imperial] Cabinet has toured the Dominions to obtain at first hand overseas views on Imperial! matters and to explain the attitude of the authorities at. Home. Each visit must have stimulated. the growing dcsd.ro for in.ore intensive development, and mutual assistance in the effort to solve outstanding problems. In the Commonwealth, apparently, the value of expert opinion is very widely recognised, for the Federal Government has- arranged for four of the loading business men. at Homo to visit Australia and advise ;on many •matters pertaining to industrial development and allied, subjects'. Sir John.' Russell, in his brief addresses- in Australia, has stressed, with the influ:enee of an- acknowledged expert, 'matters concerning thei development of our prima-ry indusitries. This, he told an audience in Sydney, was the 'day of scientific production. The uieblioldis of haphazard working would no longer be tolerated, and' there must bei res'caTch in order .to discover what was best suited for particular regions and locadities, The idea of .all units 1 of the Empire pooling their information, in order to Obtain, the best results is attractive, and there' is no apparent .reason why it should not be dome. Joinit effort and common interests should -play an important part in strengthening the .ties Of Empire, and, those who endeavour, as Sir John 1 Bussell is endeavouring, t-Q bring about this state of things arc doing work of a most valuable kind, for it is Of material benefit alnd of Imperial significance. It is to be hoped that the viisit of this distinguished Scientist will enable the Dominion to direct its research work along the most practical lines, and ensure its willing co-operation with other parts of the Empire in any effort to secure a higher standard of production - amd better facilities for transport amd marketing.
