HEENEY TAKES A LOT OE PUNTS'H'ME'N’T. NE W YORK, July 20. Dempsey crawled into a -front row Press seat, and produced a pencil and pad to report the tight. Eddy 'Forbes, a local newspaper man, was officially announced as referee, with Tam Flynn and iCharles Mathison, of New York, the judges. Both are veterans. A battery of photographers stormed inside the ropes just before 'the main bout ‘to take pictures. Mr Rickard announced that 25,000 dollars were taken at the -gate after D o'clock at night. lleenev was first to enter the ring al; 9.4-1 p.m., wearing a Maori shawl, black and white, -which was the strangest garment ever worn in the ring by, a prize-fighter. 'Tunney walked through the crowd with h'is head bowed, but speaking to those he recognised. lie entered the ring at 9.44 p.m. Tunney wore a blue robe trimmed With red, with the marine insignia on the back. Dempsey reeovied the ‘greatest ovation of any of those who entered the ring.
Round One—Heenoy took a hard right on the chin and then landed - a stiff right. The challenger rushed Tunney to the corner and landed two blows to the (body. Tunney opened up with both fists 'to the head, but Ileeney kept boring into the champion and shot a right to the jaw. Heenoy landed a right. They clinched and then stood toe to toe trading iblows to the head 'oa even terms. Tunney landed a left to the body .and a right to the jaw.
Ileeney, then hooked a left to the jaw and Tunney landed a left to the body, but took 'four puniches to thehead in return. Tunney jarred Ileeney with a straight right to the jaw. Heeney landed both lists tothe head, making the champion dance away. They sparred in mid-rin'g a't the bell. The round was even.
Round Two. —'They exchanged rights and (clinched; Tunney, with his back to the ropes, sent Heeney back on his heels with Tofts and rights to the head. Heeney kept moving forward, but was taking many, punches -to the head. Tunney landed a stiff right to the jaw, a loft to the head, and then a right to the mouth, which opened a slight cut on the challenger's lip. Tunney brought up a terrific left uppercut, but that did not stop the game challenger, who returned blow for blow. Tenney’s round.
Round Three. —Tunney landed a right to the jaw. They clinlched. -Ileeney landed a light left and Tunney put a hard right to the jaw. Heeney jarred Tunney with a right to the face and the -champion backed 'away. 'Tunney began to rely on his left to the jaw and backed away from Heeney almost to a run. 'Heeney almost floored 'Tunney with a left to the jaw. Tunney had to dance aw'av. Heeney again reached Tunney with a right to the jaw. Tunney drew blood from Heeney’s nose with left ja'bs, !but Heeney put a terrific left to the body. The contestants then began punching each other about the’head at the bell. -Heeney ’ s round.
Round .Four. —.Both started cautiously. Heeney landed a right and left to the face, taking a left to the body in return. 'Tunney 'sent a left jab to the chin, opening a small cut under the challenger's chin. Heeney landed one or two punches to Tunney's head. Tunney landed a 'hard right to the jaw, making the challenger clinch. Tunney pur a hard right f,o the body and then a hard left. Heeney rushed the champion, making him back away. The challenger was bleeding from the nose and a cut under the chin, but Was fighting viciously. Heeney drove Tunney to the ropes with a flurry of body punches and was lighting him hard at the belt. Heeney V'face was covered in blood as he went to bis corner. Tunney's round. CHALLENGER APPEARS TN .BAP WAY. Round Five.—Blood streamed from Jleonov’s nose, as he came out. Tunney landed two light lefts to bis hc'ad. Heeney, always moving for war’d, landed hajf a dozen puniches on 'the head and ibjcly. Tunney shot hard rjghts to the chin, clin'ched, 'and came out of if very slowlv. Tunney staggered Tom wi'tii b hard right to ‘the body. Heeney sent a left to the b'odv, and then -landed a long left to 'the ear. Tunney missed with both h'ands, and the ehal-
longer landed a right to the eh'in. Tunnoy half floored tlTeeney with a left and right to the body, but Tom rose without a count. The challenger (appeared to be in a bad way, but was still fighting viciously. Heeney landed a right at, the bell. Tunney’s round. Round Six.—'Heeney grazed Tunr.ey’s body with a right. The champion landed a right under Heeney’s heart and the latter .replied with a right to the head. ‘They exchanged blows to the head jand! elinc/hed. Heeney landed a hard -left to the body and Tunney backed off. Tunney landed a left and rights to the body and Heeney backed the (champion to the ropes and took a left to the body and a right, to the head as a reshlt. Tunney jabbed -Heeney’s head with both fists continually, 'cutting the challenger up badly. Heeney landed a right to the body; the New Zealander appeared slightly groggy.. As he missed .a left to the chin, Tunney shook 'Tam with a hard left to the jaw. The champion was fighting a superb battle and was wearing the challenger d'ow-n. Tu lino v’-s round. i-
Ronml -Seven. —They (.s-p'arred 'for an opening. Tunney landed a right to the body, then two lofts -to the head. The champion dug his right glove deep into Heeney’s body. Heeney landed a sharp left to the head. Tunney jarred Tom with a left to the- face. Tunney had the 'better of an exchange at close quarters. Tleeney landed a left to the body. They clinched and Tunney placed a right to the body and then in a furious exchange 'Heeney landed two blows to Tunney’s one, forcing the latter to -retreat. Tunney placed a left to the face. The crowd cheered as Heeney landed a hard left to the face. They were sparring at the hell. Heeney’s round.
HEENEY’.S EYE DAMAGED. Round Eight. —Tunney met Heeney with a right to the body as 'the challenger bored in. Heeney was blinking his left eye and backing f&oin the champion, who repulsed him. Heeney wiped his eye with his glove, but was unable to -clear it. He was unable to see out of Ms eye. This Was the first time Heeney backed away, which was obviously owing to restricted sight. Tunney jarred Tom with a two-fisted attack on the face. Heeney had a vision of the champion and then landed a left jab -to the face, and despite his eye, stood toe to toe exchanging punches. Tunney drove with both fists to the head and had Heeney groggy at 'the bell. Round Nine.—Tunney landed two fists 'to the body and then one. Two punches to the head were followed by a straight left to the face. Heeney still bled from the nose. Tunney sent Ileeney back on his heels with both hands to the body and then exchanged punches to the 'head at long range. Tunney opened a deep gash over Ileeney’s left eye and blood poured down Tom’s face, but he refused to stop boring in. Tunney jabbed the challenger with a left and right to the head. Heeney sent over a terrific right as they came out of a clinch. Tunney then scored with a straight left and the champion sent both -fists to the body. Tunney’s round.
Round Ten. —-Tunney sent a right to the body. They clinched and Tunney scored with two right's to the head and three rights to the face, IIoo? cv’s face was now a gory mess, and his le'ft eye almost closed. Tom put a hard left to the body, the challenger spitting blood, but -never took backward stops. Tunney landed three left jabs to the body. Heeney landed a left to the chin and a right to the jaw. Tleeney rested his head on the champion’s shoulder and landed lightly -to the body. Tunney drove a hard right, to the'stomach and then a series of hard lefts and rights to the head. Heeney was now taking a bad battering, but refused to back. Tunney floored Heeney with a right to the jaw. -At the bell the challenger’s seconds picked him up and half carried him -to the corner. 'The bell apparently saved Ileeney, whose seconds worked over him to bring him to. Tor nev’s round.
Round Eleven.—-Tleeney came out groggy. Tunney staggered him with lefts and rights to 'the hc'ad. Ileeney was in a bad way, (almost ready to topple over. Tunney fought cautiously, driving both lists -t.o the head. A left almost knocked join’s mouthpiece out. Tunney put everything he had behind his punches. Heeney was fighting Mindly, but landed -a hard right to the jaw. Tunney staggered Heeney with lefts and rights -to the head. Then,
with Heeney absolutely groggy, the referee stopped the bout and Tunney retained the title.
