Prior to tins voyage of Cook two nationals had already established communication with the Hawaiian Islands. A shipload of -Spami.yh marines were dropped there in the sixteenth century, and their descendants are. found on the is'.and of Kekea to-day. Long before that the Chinese traded with the gioup and they called it the Sandalwood Islands.

Boston missionaries arrived in the group in 1820. 1 lie island were then a. free native kingdom, ami remained so, at least mainly, with a brief interval of half-hearted British role, until ,1898, when the exigencies of the Spanish-American War compelled the formal, annexation of the islands to the United States. Only about 30,000 in the group are classed' as Caucasian American's', but- 217,618 of the population of 310,000 are American citizens.
