NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) The Gisborne Racing Cluo have received excellent acceptances tor the opening day of their winter meeting iw-morrow. Royal \vink, who won a race, at the Waimate Hunt Club meeting hetd last ween, is a half-brother to Royal Star (a iNew Zealand Cup winner), also Frisco Mail, who was a hurdler much above the average. While lvoyai Wink will win races, he will never rise to the heights ins breeding would suggest. As H. Teliord and R. S. Baghy have strong teams of horses at \v angauui just now, the river town race trade is a very busy one. The trainers named have very promising material under their care, and as their horses will be we.l forward lor spring meetings they should be worth following. At the Te Kuiti meeting, held at Ellerslie a few weeks ago, Rahepoto ran his best l-aco over hurdles to dead heat with Kauri hark, and was most unlucky not to win outright. Kauri Park afterwards went to Trentliam and showed fair form against strong opposition. On this form Rahepoto loons certain to prove very hard to beat in his Gisborne engagements. At the Hawke’s Bay meeting helci last month Dishonoured ran really well, although not as forward as many ol the horses beaten. Dishonoured will be a runner in the first division of the Maiden Race at Gisborne to-morrow, and is expected to increase R. Reed’s record for the jockeys’ championship. Episode, who was recognised as the best two-year-old of the current season, is getting through excellent work, and will be well forward by the time the Wanganui Guineas comes up for decisiop, in seven weeks time. Some ot» Absurd’s stock have shown a natural aptitude for jumping. The latest of the English sire’s company to uphold this contention is Standard, .who is fencing brilliantly at Trentliam, and on his work Mr. Kemball’s cast-off should capture a hack hurdle race. Last season Singleton gave evidence of developing into a good stake earner, but went amiss early in the season. The East Coast representative was a competitor at 1110 winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Club, and his form was such that lie was being kept in mind for the Wellington meeting, but was not sent there, due, it is said, to an injury. If Singleton is again all right he will make his presence felt at the Gisborne meeting. Bahudur will never be anything blit a very moderate performer, but is an excellent. jumper, and at the Auckland and Te Kuiti meetings held in June ran fair races. Bahudur will be a competitor in the steeplechases at the Gisborne meeting, and, being very fit, should be able to secure some of the prize money offering Addlepate ran well at the late meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Club, and appears as an acceptor for the Gisborne meeting, at which the class is mot very strong. Seeing that Addlepate will have R. Reed in the saddle, the Hawke’s Bay representative will be one of the favourites.
