RIVALS FOR SHIELD

OKAIAWA AND STRATFORD.

THIRD TIME IN FINAL. The result of Saturday’s games leaves Okaiawa and Stratford to contest the final for the McMasters’ Shield for the second season in succession and for the third season in the history of games for the trophy. Their first meeting in such a contest took place 22 years ago, when at Eltham, on September 20 ,1906, Stratford took the honours with a 19 to 3 victory. Last season, when two games were required to decide, the issue, was the second to place the Maroon and Blues and the Red and Blacks as rivals for possession of the shield. The first game resulted in a six point draw at Eltliam on August 11, and another keen battle was waged at Hawera on September 5, when Stratford won by 10 points to 8. During the twenty-three seasons up to the end of last year, in which the shield has been competed for (there being no competition in 1916, 1917 and 1918) it has been won six times each by Hawera and Waimate, four times each by Tukapa and Stratford, and once each by Okaiawa, Star and Clifton. The club records are as follow: Hawera: 1905, 1915, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1924. Waimate: 1908, 1909, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1914. Tukapa: 1902, 1904, 1922, 1926. Stratford: 1906, 1907, 1925, 1927. Star: 1903.
