DOMINION NEWS.

RATING AT WELLINGTON.

(By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Wellington City Council has just issued its annual rate notices and general consternation has been expressed at the manner in which ..they have jumped up, as much as £7 or more on properties of moderate value. . The Mayor explains that this is the result of the recent poll, when it was decided that all rating should.be on the unimproved value. The result is that central city holdings have to pay more, while suburban properties will pay less. The council receives only the same -amount as 'before and has not raised the rates. The Alayor points out that Wanganui recently found it-neces-sary to revert- to rating on the annual value, and he considers this fairer, as owners of exjiensive buildings now escape too lightly. “It ’would not surprise me,” be says, “to find the ratepayers reversing the decision-'-of last vea-r.”
