STOWAWAYS CONVICTED. (By Telegraph—-Press Association.) GISBORNE, July 6. Four stowaways on the steamer Katoa from; Auckland were fined £3, in default three .days’ imprisonment by the Magistrate this morning. The accused were David Russell, aged 27, Henry Wixon, aged l 23, Norman Travers, aged- 22, and George Trillo, aged 22. BAG-SNATCHING CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 6. “This is perhaps the meanest and most contemptible theft case that has come before this- court,’’ said Sub-In-spector Fitzpatrick, in referring to the offence of Stanley Robert Webber alias Stanley Robert Wilson, who pleaded guilty to a bag-snatching charge. The sub-in,specter said that a young lady was in the Bromley Cemetery kneeling ,beside the grave of her brother. She had put her bag on the ground, and aeu&ed came up behind and snatched it. - Accused! was caught by the sexton. As there have been a number of similar thefts the police- secured a remand and the accused will appear on July 13. WOMAN FINED FOR-SHOPLIFTING WELLINGTON, July 6. Eleanor Brodie, a widow, aged l 55, was fined £5 to-day for the theft of two bats from the shop of Hugh Gilmer, •where she had gone with another woman. Her companion was some time ago fined for receiving. Brodie could not- then be dealt with owing to having a broken arm*, and she was not able to appear at court to-day. A written statement obtained from Brodie was put in by the police. Counsel said that the defence was handicapped by the absence of the accused. It might have been possible to show that she was too drunk to know wliat she was doing. The magistrate, however, said he bad no hesitation in convicting on the evidence before him. > RESOLVED TO HAVE HIS REVENGE.
PALMERSTON N., July 6. A sequel to a nocturnal visit to the nurses’ home on June 30 was heard at the Police Court this morning whi-m Marcus Alfred Stapleton Mouldey, a labourer, aged 2b, was charged with breaking and entering the home with intent to commit a crime. A further change of assault was withdrawn. The police statement was to the effect tli a t on tlie morning of June 30, it 12.45 o’clock, n domestic at the home ivftj awakened by a blow mi the -©aid. The accused had been keeping company with a girl who had been cmixoyed at the nurses’ home. FT© had believed that the girl whom he had assaulted was flic one who had caused a break in his relationships with hois friend. The accused l , in his statement, said ha had resolved to seek revenge on an employee a.t the- nurses’ home for separatinrr him from his girl friend, and had made further trouble for. h-imiseff. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sonfence.
