MAIN HIGHWAYS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. Pi ATE. A COUNTY’S WORK. i A meeting of the No. 8 Alain Highways 'Council was held in the Wanganui County Council Chambers at Wanganui on Tuesday. The chairman (Air Ball) s'aid that £IOO,OOO would he spent on the Auck-land-Wellington Highway between Bulls and Wnit'otara within the next six years. Air W. G. Belton (Patea) said that lie did not consider this allocation of the money was quite fair. Fated had laid tar roads before the Highways Board came into being and although the counties with toll-gates had oeen compensated with the £3 for £1 subsidy, Piatea, which had done a greatdeal of work to the highways in its district, received no consideration — even though the money for that Work had come from 'the Baton County rates.
Air Ball pointed out that the allocation of the monies was fixed by Parliament and if the Patea road were t'o be included more money would have to bo found. The time for building the road would also ho extended.
Air Belton pointed nut that the road did not- need building, only Widening, and also that the Patea side-i-oads were being- starved t'o keep the main highwav in order.
Mr .Morrison (Win it o tarn) supported the Paten representative.
Ft w'as reifonmiended that the Paten County ibo. iiieluded in the scheme, if after six years, sufficient, funds were available. In the meantime the usual system of maintenance and widening is to be continued by the county rating. —‘‘ CTironiel'e. ’ ’
