HAWERA POLICE COURT
CASES DEALT WITH TO-DAY
At the Hawera Police Court this morning, before Messrs. G A. Burgess and J. M. Townsend, J’s.P., an eldei)y man named James Welch, who gave his address as Eltham, was cnayged with being drunk in Princes Street yesterday afternoon. . The .accused was further charged* with the theft of three bottles of pickles valued at 4s, the property of some person unknown. Defendant made a statement to the pol ice that he found the pickles in, a bav in a lavatory at one of the hotels, and had sold them to a boarding-house keeper for 4s. The accused! was convieted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness; a.nd on the charge of theft he was convicted and fined 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment. ASSAULT AT SIDE-SHOW. A Maori named William Raimi, 30 years of age, described as a labourer, appeared in answer to a charge of assault at one of the side-shows yesterday afternoon. Harry Baulin, an employee of Messrs. Staig and Co., now showing in conjunction with the Winter Show, deposed that accused was fooling about on the merry-go-round, trying to shake children off the horses as they were going round, and when asked to desist struck witness on the jaw, which necessitated medical attention. Douglas Mclntosh, another employee of Staig’s, gave corroborative evidence, saying that the accused was ' making a general nuisance of himself, and appeared to be under the influence of liquor. ■ Sergeant Henry said ’the accused’ was a decent enough "man when sober, hub he had’ been previously convicted for theft, trespass and drunkenness. A fine of £1 was inflicted, and the accused was. ordered, to pay two witnesses’ expenses and medical expenses amounting to 12s 6d.
