i PIDEMIC OF BURGLARIES STOPPED.
DUNEDIN, June 27. By the capture of three young men, named emerge William Uren, Laviti iiruce l>e.eridge, and Francis Sinclair i.arn, detecti.es have stopped the epidemic. or burglaries and unlawful con- , ersion of motor-cars in Dunedin and w.aniaru. To-day Tiren and Beveridge pleaded guilty to the conversion of six ca.s valued at £I9OO, two charges or chel fc and one of breaking and entering, while Ward and Beveridge admitted Jght charges ot converting cars valued at 4J289-J. one charge or theft, one charge of breaking and entering, and four charges of burglary. Their plan ivas to take a car urom a, Dunedin parking area to Oamaru, and there ..•onvert other ears. The burglaries snowed more than amateur skill. The mggest burglary was of Wriglit, Stephenson and Co.’s offices in the town hah molding at Oamaru, entrance off the main street being gained by keys .omul among papers concerning the irm in the back of a converted car. \\ ai d and 'Beveridge opened the sate, and removed the cash boxes and goods. They stole £lO4 in money and also goods making a total value of £l7O. They returned to Dunedin in two con.ei ted cars, where they divided the .poll, throwing the cash boxes and p. [Vi's into a creek and destroying cheques. Among their equipment were rubber gloves, torches, masks, and a great collection of burglars’ implements.
The accused pleaded guilty to all charges and were committed for sentence on the indictable charges, while sentence on the summary charges was a itliheld till the Supreme Court sentences were passed. Uren’s bail was re ewed, but hail was refused to Ward and lie. eridge, the Magistrate saying that’the offences were not due to ad- . entiirous silliness, but to a distinct o< iminalitv.
