After a four hours’ meeting of the General Council of the Trades Union Congress, an attempt, led by Messrs. George Hicks and H. J. Cook, to force the council to discontinue the investigation of industrial peace possibilities with the Mond group was defeated by 15 votes to 6. Messrs. Hicks and Cook urged that the discussions had reached their limit of usefulness.

The meeting also discussed the proposal to establish, national conciliation machinery, to which the confederation of employers’ organisations and the British Industries Federation will he asked to subscribe. This matter will be reviewed by a joint conference of employers and the Trades Union Congress on July 4. It is intended that this machinery should be entirely voluntary ami without the element of compulsion.
