DELEGATES QUARREL

AT DEMOCRATS’ CONVENTION. ' SCUFFLING TAKES PLACE. A TUMUIiTOUR SESSION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, June 27.

News from the convention hall at Houston, states that the Democrats be-■o-an their (lel'ibe-ra'tions to-day with three solid hours of music and toward the end everybody seemed a little tired of it. The heat was too intensely uneornffortalblc for word's. An attempt to seat a number of Louisiana delegates known to Ibe opposed to Governor Smith was overwhelmingly defeated bv the convention, indicating too clearly Governor Smithes ascendency. Senator Robinson was chosen permanent chairman of the convention. The conviction is growing hourly that ho will be the vice-presidential nominee. He made a short address, beginning with a slurring reference to Air. Hoover’s long residence in Britain intimating that this disqualifies him for the presidency. He caused astonishment by demanding that no “wet” plank be adopted in the Democratic platform “this is neither ia prohibition nor an anti-prohibition pa"ftv, ’’ he said. The crowd was so surprised that it remained silent. He concluded with a plea for unity, saying: “Let not the Democrats suffer from self-inflicted wounds,” but the crowd went, mad when lie said 'that religion is no disqualification for public office. ■Considerable scuffling occurred and some rea'llv well aimed blows to the jaw were given and received, when Georgia and Tennessee delegations quarrelled amongst themselves as 'to whether they should join the ■Smith demonstration. A figh't in the Alabama delegation caused the summoning of eight police to protect, the standard. There was a fearful tumult, but it wias all good-natured horse-play in comparison with what has happened at, previous Democratic conventions. The picturesque Mayor of New York, Mr. Walker, who began his career as a song writer, rose to offer a resolution for a recess until seven o’clock in the evening, but. the band interrupted with selections from his songs.

rOMMTTTTIES AT WORK. NEW YORK, June 26. When the Democratic convention was re-convened in the evening i't was strongly rumoured that the enforcement plank would not mention 'the eighteenth amendment. The convention selected various committees and adjourned until 11 o’'clock to-morrow morning, when the platfoiir. committee sltart's its .final work towards putting the platform in shape for presentation to the convention.
