NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) The only race meeting to he held this week is the Te Kuiti Racing Club’s fixture, which opens at El le rs lie. on Saturday next. As Beau Cavalier and Glendowie have each accepted' for their flat race engagement at the Te Kuiti meeting, it would appear that they are being raced in view of the Wellilington Steeplechase. There is a. steeplechase on the second day’s programme of the Te Kuiti. meeting. Both Beau Cavalier and Glendowie appear amongst the nominations, but a.s the prize is not very large, theirs may be complimentary entries. A fair amount, of interest is being taken in the contest between R.. Reed and T. Green for the l honour of being at the top of the jockeys’ winning list for the .season 1927-28. Prior to. the recent meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Glulb, Green led by one, but as each rode three winners at the fixture, they are as they were before the meeting started. It is really remarkable the amount of interest that can be exhibited by followers of riders; i;f the contest is at all close. Even owners of horses have been known to start their horses in races merely to help their favourite: rider. Some years ago l a great contest of Dominion wide interest took place between the late A. Whittaker and IL! Gray for the honour of most wins. After a most exciting go the. honours went to Gray, but lie only won by a single win. and it was achieved at the Wellington meeting, which was the. last of the. season. . J In hurdle races Matu jumps well and is always among those finishing well. At the recent meeting, at Hastings,: Matu gave a couple of pleasing exhibitions over the. “big jumps,” and on the showing he is a distinct possibility for some of the big steeplechases; ahead. Troilus appears fated, to meet something just too good in hurdle races. At. the recent meeting of the Hawke s Bay Jockey Club,- the son of Bisogno went under Lo two good hurdlers in Gaze and Pencils, but on these" perlonuances Troilus should bo a. certainty to win a hurdle race in minor company. After P'uwliero fell: at Napier Park the reason for the mishap was stated to. be due to the gelding breaking down. Just how much Buvhe.ro “broke down’ is .shown in the fact that Puvhero was a runner for the .hurdle race at Hastings last Saturday. Radiate run really well on the Hawke’s) Bay trip, but despite his good showings, won. only once. If reasonable care is taken of Radiate, and bo is given a good preparation next- season, it is quite -possible that he will win some important steeplechases. Radiate jumps well, and his performances in flat events show that ho has more pace than most of those horses being raced “over country” at the present time. Last spring the East Coast owned Singleton showed very promising form, so- good was .it that ‘he looked like one capable of winning handicaps, but he subsequently lost form, and failed to fulfill early expectations. Singleton was a runner at Hastings last week, and looked well, and his form was such that he is worth remembering for events ahead. Singleton is engaged at the Wellington meeting. It was reported at Hashings that Per lo D'e Leon is quite himself again, after hi;s Ellers lie- mishap. J.bis means that this gelding will be on hand to strengthen the fields of hurdlers that are to compete at Trenthaau and R.ieearton. Brigadier Bill’s form in the steeplechases at El.lerslie has been well critic-; i-sed, the majority -writing lias performances down as very dissappoi.nting. (While he failed badly on the first and: second days it is absurd to say that has; Dcrfornmnce (up till lie fell about three-, quarters of a- mile from home) wa.s poor, bn the third day. Me had 12.0 in the saddle, and just prior to falling was going better than any of his opponents. Pq.r this -reason it would he unwise to discard Brigadier Bill from future “possibles” in steeplechases to come. After Locarno won at the Hawke- s Bay Hunt Club meeting he was sold by Mr G. Beatson to Mr F. Armstrong. Locarno ran in the latter sportsman s colours at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey

Club’s meeting last Sslunlay and gavel Ma- Armstrong a quick return by beating a very warm favourite in Dishonoured. Locarno is a son of EHysiau and has been hunted and is qualified, and it is stated that Mr Armstrong intends racing him over jumps; before long. Seeing that the gelding has beaten fair fluids twice in ■succession m flat events, it would: appear premature to put him to jumping races. ' ■Despite a great private reputation, and the fact that he looked the aristocrat of the field, Royal Lineage carried only £44 at Hastings last Avednesday. As ho was nob prominent m the race even tills amount was too much, hut as he is- decidedly promisin' 1 " lie call; be kept in mind lor future races. There is talk of Royal Lineage being taken to Sydney for the spring meetings.
