CHORAL CONCERT.
WANGANUI SOCIETY. A GREAT ATTRACTION. The musical people of Ha worn arid district are assured of a treat this evening at the Opera House when the Wanganui Chorhl Society of a hundred Voices under their gifted conductor, Mr P. W. Slater,, will make their first appearance before a Hawera audience. This society is exceedingly popular in in Wanganui and Hawera residents who have heard them are enthusiastic in their appreciation and say that' many of the effects secured under the direction of the conductor are remarkable. The programme,.besides being a popular aerie's, is one that will give file chorus ample scope to show of its best.
•Last night Mr Slater was ‘present at the Ilawera Male Ch'oir practice, and addressed the .members on choral work, emphasising specially the need for memorising so that choristers could do without music and so devote all their attention to the grades of expression and interpretation desired by the conductor. He stressed the need to “soak yourself in the words” so as to get the ideas to bo expressed and in this way note and syllable would synchronise in expression and .meaning. He congratulated the choir on the work he heard at practice and said that, while criticism was good and essential, it needed always to be constructive and so, helpful to the performers. ; He took the choir in one number, the popular “Comrades in Arms,” and assured members after Wards that if anything lie li’ad said or any idea lie had given them was. of help, then he felt his-visit was worth while.
