OPUNAKE.

SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION. A very pleasant social was held in the town hall supper-room on Thursday evening last in aid of the funds of St. oarnauas Church choir. During the evening Mils. F. Julian was presented with a handsome crystal bowl by the teachers and scholars of the Sunday school as a small token of appreciation of her services to the Sunday school. Mrs. Julian suitably replied. Gaines and dancing were indulged in, and items supplied by the following were much appreciated: Mesdames Church and Hutton, Miss P. Burton, Messrs W. L, F. Chambers, I>. J. Thomas, Pollock, Key worth, Tresize. and ’Rev. D. J. Davies. GENERAL.

At a gathering of members of St. Barnabas Church choir, held after the evening service on Sunday last, a presentation was made to the organist (Mrs. H. J. Newnan) in recognition of her services extending over a num..er of years.

On Sunday afternoon a. lire broke out in the maram grass and lupins in the sandhills on the property of Mr. R. Julian at Piliama. The lire continued to burn all night, but little damage was done to the fences. About 25 acres in all were covered by the dames.

On Saturday afternoon Mrs. Houston, Commissioner for South Taranaki, visited the local Brownie pack. About twenty Brownies were in attendance, under Tawny Owl Edna. Hindi and Pack Leader Kate Julian. Ten members were enrolled and received their recruit badges, while six received their second-class badges, after which Miss H. Fearer, who will succeed Miss McLean as Brown Owl, was introduced. After the ceremony the Brownies were inspected by the commissioner, who complimented them on their neat appearance. The meeting was concluded with games taught by Mrs. Houston and the singing of “Tape.’ l

PERSONAL

Mr. AY. E. Donnelly, of "Wellington, is at present staying with Rev. anu Airs. Goastwortli. Air. C. 0. Edmonds is paying a visit to Wellington. Atiss C. Moore, of Auckland, is the guest of Airs. Edmonds. Air. H. Newman, of Miramar, Wellington, is paying a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. IT. J. Newman. Air. J. Burton, who has for a number of tears been a member of the staff of the local Bank of New Zealand, lias received notice of his transfer to Feilding. Air. Burton is at present in Wellington on annual leave, but will return to Opunake before taking up his duties at Feilding Air. H. Ashworth is at present a patient in the New Plymouth hospital. Air. Al. Hickey, of the staff of the ‘■oonl post office, is at present away on annual leave.
