WINTER SHOW AWARDS

Butter and Cheese Section

The upstairs hall has always been, an attractive section of the Winter Show, but this year’s set-out of the dairy entries is considered quite the best yet seen in the show. The hall is gay with bunting, rows and rows of small flags of all nations, with walls appropriately draped in wnite and, gold, and hanging from the ceiling an array of pot plants. ' At either end is a huge Marketing Board poster— one depicting the exchange of the primary products of the Dominions for the manufactured goods of the Mother Country, and the other the highways of Empire over ocean routes round the world. Down the hal] in two lines and along the -walls are the rows of cheese and boxes of butter neatly and artistically arranged and much, decorated with greenery". The pot plants, ferns, and coloured flags make a very nice setting. The effect is excellent and makes the display" one of the best to he seen at any show. It is distinctly creditable to the man who designed the set-out and the workers who did the work. The quality of the produce was also very good and reflected credit on factories and makers. „ ~ . The judges and officers of the Dairy Division had a strenuous and important work to do in making awards. Their remarks are very complimentary. QHEESE. • The judge’s remarks are: The prize exhibits in the cheese classes are of exceptionally good quality, reflecting credit on the factory suppliers and managers concerned, the uavour being outstanding and the body and text lire very line. A good deal of attention also has evidently been given by most exhibitors to the outu ard appearance and finish; a few, however, have left room for considerable improvement in this direction. Many of the entries not highly placed are good bodied and as well made as the winners, 'but through the flavour not holding' up are bearing low scoring points cards. Taking the classes generally, they compare very favourably with exhibits at other Dominion dairy shows. BETTER! SECTION Judges’ remarks are as follow: It gives the judges pleasure to report upon the quality of the butter exhibits. A very large majority of the entries were outstanding; in fact it .would be a most diflicult matter to find a choicer collection in this or otliei parts of the dairy world. Make, too, generally speaking, was quite up to our best, while colour was found defective in only a few instances. _ tries were particularly well finished. Notwithstanding that preservative was not used, the quality of the butter in the class taken from the grading stores demonstrated the excellent keeping quality of the entries. This is a \ tribute to the makers, and we heartily ’ congratulate them on their efforts. CHEESE. In the, cheese awards the maximum points are : Flavour 50, body 30, colour and finish 20; total 100.
