HAWERA CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

There was an excellent attendance of 35 members of the Hawer-a Bowling Club at the annual meeting, held last night in the pavilion, the president ' (Mr. G. A. Burgess) being in the chair. ANNUAL REPORT, the report for the past year was as follows: On behalf of the committee I have to congratulate the club members on having had another very successful year. The weather during our last season has been wonderfully good, and with the advent of the “daylight saving” the bowlers were enabled to enjoy many extra hours on the green with pleasure and profit. The past season may be classed as not only interesting, but very successful from every point of view. From the balancesheet it will be seen t-liat we have had a very good year financially and show a good surplus after paying all accounts. This is- a pleasing factor, and wo trust is the nucleus of a fund for the liquidation of our existing mortgage. ’ ‘

The club competitions were keenly oontested, and tire winners ran out a’s follows: Tire champion singles were won by Mr. C. Robb, this being his second win, and he is to be- congratulated on his success. The runner-up, Mr. M. J. Squire, was a very close second. The champion pairs were won by Messrs. S. Adamson and A. H. S. Hodge after some exciting games and close contests. Messrs. H. S. Maslin and T. Herbert filled the role of run-ners-up. Tire, handicap singles, for Mrs. \\ . McDonald’s handsome trophy, was won by Mr. F. E. Clarke, an enthusiastic and- promising player, Mr. J. D. Tait being second. The handicap pairs were won by Messrs. R. P. Goodchap and E. J. Squire. Messrs. Bennett and Sutton have donated a handsome silver cup for future junior championship competitions. Our congratulations are extended to Mr. F. yum’s rink .rom the Park Club on their consecutive win at the Easter tournament. Our best thanks are due to the green committee, Messrs. McDonald and Winks, who have worked faithfully and well in their endeavour to oring the green up to standard; also to t«ie members ot Die club who have iviudly given their time in assisting them. A new concrete shed for the storage of top-dressings, etc., has oee-n built, and is a distinct asset to the club’s property. Our vacant section, which has been an eyesore for so long, is being well laid out as a croquet lawn. This again will ennance the- value of our property. As the result of happy and successful socials, the green li-a,s been ornamented by xlie erection of two punga whares. The ladies have continued to preside at our afternoon teas and inter-club functions, •and our grateful thanks are due to them.

The statement of accounts showed that subscriptions totalled £192, wages paid totalled £lO2, interest £53 10s 6d, and rates £l4 3s 9d. A transfer of £7l had been made from tlie Post Office Savings Bank, and of that £SO had been placed on fixed deposit. There was a credit balance in the bank of £44 4s 3d.

In moving the adoption of the report- and balance-sheet, the chairman said that all assets were written down to a safe basis. He congratulated the club on the success -attending the •operations of the past year, and expressed the hope that this would be continued.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Election of officers resulted as -under: Patron, Mr. George Syme, senr. (re-elected); president, Mr. G. A. Burgess (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Messrs. IT. E. Shaw and F. E. Clarke; general committee, Messrs-. J. Foy, E. Dillon, R. P. Goodchap, Alaska, T. Hobbs, C. Robb, Bull, T. Corkill, A. E. Wills; lion, secretary. Air. John Renwick; lion, auditor, Air. F. E. Clarke; official recorder, Air. J. Champion. It was resolved that- for shield matches one team be entered. Committees were formed as under: Syme Shield, Messrs. Adamson, J. Foy and Burgess; Easter tourney, Alessrs. J. Foy, G. Burgess-, A. Hodge and T. Cor kill. It was resolved to Jiold a social for the ladies as a recognition of their good work. A hearty vote of thanks was carried to Alessrs. Bennett and- Sutton for their kindness in donating a challenge cup for the junior championship. A special vote to the ladies for their good work was also canned. A vote of thanks was passed to the present green wardens, Alessrs. McDonald and J. Winks, for tlieir excellent work during the season. It was resolved to confirm the lease made with the new Hawera Croquet Club of the section at the hack of the green, which has been made for five years. Appreciation of the liberality of Air. E. Cann in donating a cup for competition amongst the Hawera and Park Clubs was- expressed, and it was resolved to send a letted of thanks- to the donor.
