BILL BEFORE HOUSE OF LORDS
{Australian Press Association —United Service.) LONDON, June 13. In the House of Lords, in committee on the Franchise Bill, Lord Newton moved an amendment to clause 1, fixing the age of new voters of both sexes at. 25 instead of 21. He said, he feared the day when the Labour Party might say: “Let us take the vote from all people above 50 years of age and bestow it on bright young things of 14 or 15 who have, been properly schooled in Communistic principles.” His amendment would keep the number of voters, within manageable limits. Viscount Cecil opposed the omendmet asi it would' destroy the Bill. Lord Cain ford said there was no demand for the Bill./The matter ishoukl lie left to the existing electorate to decide at a. general election. The Lord Chancellor urged the house not to kill the Bill by passing the amendment. On a vote the amendment was defeated! by 87 votes to 11, ancii tlie committee stage of the Bill wag concluded.
