U.S. PRESIDENCY
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE. HOOVER IN ASCENDANCY. FA RATERS’ DEMONSTR ATIONS. 'iiirtil Cross Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received 9.50 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, June J 3. A message from the convention hall, Kansas City, states that the platform committee is hopelessly in disagreement over the agriculture plank after an all-night session lasting until four o’clock tins morning in the hope of reaching unanimity in time to present a completed platform to the convention early this morning. Sixty different agricultural planks were submitted. A small group, obviously of farmers alittle worse for liquor, paraded the streets for the greater part of the night- shouting, “We don’t want Hoover.” They grew slightly objectionable when they interrupted several pro-Hoover mass meetings, but their demonstration attained the levels of only comic opera. The Hoover star is now so far in the ascendancy that nothing can stop him, despite the fact that the Curtis and Lowden groups still persist that they will light him to the hitter end. Mr. Hoover’s difficulty, however, consists now in laying plans for the ultimate reconciliation of these, elements after his nomination, in order to assure party solidarity at the polls. In older to accomplish this l Air. Hoover must approve of an agricultural plank not too objectionable to the anti-Hoover group and to indicate a Vice-Presidential candidate distinctly favourable to the latter. Air. Dawes, of course, fills the position, but it is openly admitted that Air. Coolidge does not like Air. Dawes. General Pershing is another possibility. An interesting rumour is current that Airs. Alabel Willebrandt, at present connected with the Federal Department of Justice., will be AttorneyGeneral if Air. Hoover is elected, thus being the first woman member of Cabinet. It is reported that Senator Borah's strongest prohibition plank has been written into the platform.
