OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Opunake School Committee whs held last Thursday evening. There were present: Messrs. G. 11. Hutton (chairman), P. Dalrymple, F. Loesch, C. iClare, R. Walker, and A. Hindi (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. W. H. Burgelss) reported 'that after the term holidays the school opened with a roll number of 2:27, but on account ed’ sickness the average was only 192. . The visiting commit'teo Messrs. Dalrymple and Walker) reported that a visit 'had been paid to the school during the month and there were no complaints except ’one regarding the windows which ’were to ! be altered by the Education Board. In connection with the building of a new fence around the School, it was reported that the town clerk (Mr. A. O’Brien) was prepared to locate the survey pegs if labour for digging was supplied. Mr. Burgess shid that labour could be procured free ’of charge. The arrangements for the Awatuna ’■bus service were reported to be satisfactory. The Education Board notified that the purchase of a typewriter for the typewriting class' had been approved. The headmaster reported that an instructress was available and it Was decided to purchase a machine. Mr. Hutton was deputed to interview Messrs. Isherwood and Bellam as to the cost of making permanent paths around the school. It was decided not to do anv more work in preparing .ground for basketball 'and) tennis. The chairman reported having received a letter from the Hon. O. J. Hawken notifying the making of a grant for the new high school. The matter could not be finalised, however, until a proclamation had been prepared by the Education Board’s solicitor and put through Parliament. It was decided to approach, the Education Board to provide accommodation at the new building for standards five and six. This would, relieve the congestion, as 75 infants were now being taught in a room meant for 40. The financial position was reviewed and it was decided to purchase a gramophone and records to assist in the teaching of French lessons in the High School. Notification of subsidies for library purposes was received. It was stated that another £2 Os 3d worth of 'books had vet to be purchased. It" was decided to hold fortnightly euchre parties in the school in aid of the funds. Mr. Dalrymple and Clare offered to donate prizes.
PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Opunake branch of the Pliinkot Society was held on Friday afternoon last. Mrs. T. H. Hickey occupied the chair. The Hawera branch wrote to state that owing to ‘the increasing volume of work, the nurse found it difficult to cope with it, and that the Opunake branch should communicate with the New Plymouth branch with regard to Opunake getting the services 'of its nurse. Members expressed appreciation of Nurse Dix’S work and also regret at parting with her. The offer of the Opunake Ranger company to look after the Pliuike't Rest room as part of their work was accepted. GENERAL. The 1.0. F. Lodge held a euchre party on Tuesday evening last. The prizes were won by Mrs. W. F. Fake and Mrs. J. Hickey, and 'the consolation prizes by Mrs. E. Malcolm.and. Miss B. Donnelly. , Supper was provided by Mrs. and Miss Whittington. PERSONAL. Mr. R'a't'hbone, who has been visiting friends in Opunake, has returned to Wellington. / Miss D. Fisher, of 'Blenheim is visiting her brother, Mr. A. A. Fisher. Mrs. M. MacTavis'li, 'of Bahiatua, who has been spending a holiday with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. M. MacTavish, has returned home.
