For cutting the corner of High and Princes Streets on Monday, a visitor to town, Robert A. Cleland, who admitted he had been careless in the matter, was fined £2 and 3s costs in the Hawera Court to-day. There ns on view in a shop window at Bluff an object that lias caused much interest at the port, and no little discussion as to its original use (states the Matauru “Ensign”). It is a glass;globe of a greenish colour, about the size of the ordinary Association football. It is airtight, and was found towards the end of last Aveek by one of the crew of the fishing A-esisel Violet on West Ruggedy Reach at SteAvart Island. AAxhere it had been cast up by the eea. At a casual glance it appears to have bloAvn on Hie surface a, German Iron Cross, but closer observation reA’eals that the mark is that of a- shamrock. One rosident has assented that it is one of the buoys used bv the Germans to mark the position of mines sunk by their ships. A seaman with AAar experience con f ideal til v stated that the globe Avas identical with those used at Mudros Harbour ais a float for submarine nets in 'boom defence. The most recent opinion expuasse*! is that it B a- float for a fishing net.
