A CARROLL MEMORIAL.

AMBITIOUS PROJECT AFOOT,

YEAR FOR ORGANISATION',

About February or March of next year will see ’one ’of the most important native gatherings held in the neighbourhood of Gisborne since the great "Wellington Home’ 5 Tiui 'tendered to 'the returning Maori warriors after the Great, War, 'say’s the "Poverty Bay Hofald: ’ ’ There is an ambitious scheme afoot to raise funds for a memorial to 'Sir James Carroll, the deceased Maori statesman whose influence for ch-operative efforts Was bo great, a factor in the relations between pakeha and Maori; and the. hui mentioned above will be held in connection with the unveiling of this memorial. It- is proposed to secure 'the Park racecourse for the gathering, which may number four or five thousand. For the purposes of organisation, a club lias been formed with ’Lady Carroll as patroness, Sir A. T. Xgata as president, Mr. P. M*atu as vice-presi-dent, Mr.-Hori Tupaea ’as chairman of committee, and treasurer. The officers of the club thus comprise representatives from Gisborne, land the appeal should meet with a lively response. The hui will last about a week, with the unveiling of the memorial as the central feature of the function. It is n'ot proposed 'to confine the invitations to Maoris alone, as the late ,<Sir James has possibly more friends among the* palcehas than among those of his own race, this appeal paradox being explained by the fact that there are more pakehas* than Maoris in the country. Tho club will have an mi■limitcl membership, but the central executive ivi.ll undertake a.ll duties* in connection with the organisation of the hui. which will be far too great fop the control of an individual. The various sections of the camp will bo placed under responsible officials, who will attend to their respective duties and captain their own sub-eommittccs. The intervening months will be filled with planning and with the ordering and erection Of ‘the memorial.
