GRAND THEATRE, TO-NIGHT.
A deft and skillful combination of melodrama, pathos and comedy told in scenes both colourful and thrilling ’ make “The Chinese Parrot,’ the Uni-versal-JeweL which opened last night at the Grand Theatre, one of the most entertaining photoplays of the season. : Whale Marian Nixon and Edmund . 13urns are -billed as the featured players the cast in reality is all-star and every member deserves equal credit for the success of the picture. The work ol Hobart 13oswortk, who plays a dual role, and lv. Sojin as the Chinese detective are especially good. “The Chinese Parrot” was adapted from Earl Derr Riggers’ mystery novel of the same name which first appeared serially in the “Saturday Evening Post,” and is now in book form. The action takes piace in Honolulu, the Mojave desert and San Francisco’s Chinatown and is leplete with mystery from beginning to end. Paul Leni, recently brought to America from Germany by Universal, is given credit for the direction and in all truth it may be said that he is the greatest foreign director in the -field today. His artistic touches —lie is a former artist and art director, we are told—-are discernable throughout the picture and he shows a few new camera , angles hitherto unthought of. The story tells of a man, jilted in his youth, who . amasses a great fortune in order to get i revenge on the girl to have it turn to ] ashes in his mouth when the < pportun- 1 ity arrives. It is distinctively enter- J tai-ning and should please everyone.
