Rugby in Taranaki

Saturday’s Results OPUNAKE PLAY GREAT GAME HAWERA’S LAST-MINUTE WIN £ —. WAIMATE JUST GET HOME

In good football weather the Ist round of the Taranaki Rugby competition was completed on Saturday. Perhaps the most outstanding result of the day’s play was the defeat of Kaponga at the hands of Opunake. The coastal team playodi great football to win by a comfortable margin. Hawera were given a close call at Patea by the home team and only snatched a victory in the last three minutes. The two teams at the tail of the competition, Waimate and. Athletic, fought out a fast game at Hawera to end in a last-minute victory for Waimate. Opunake and Okaiawa,' with one loss each are level at the head of the southern division.

Some sensations were provided by the play in the northern division. Okato ran all over a weak Old Boys team to win by a substantial margin. The two unbeaten teams in that division fought out a great forward game in the presence of a. great crowd at Inglewood, where Stratford, .last year’s winners, got home by three points, thus ’finishing the round at the head of the competition. Eltham made a great bid against Clifton, but had to cede the honours by a point. The position of the teams is as follows:
