REPRESENTATIVE GAME AT
HAWERA
WANGANUI DEFEATS TARANAKI
The annual "soccer” fixture between the Taarauaki and Wanganui representative elevens resulted in victory to the visiting ' teams on the Hawera showgrounds yesterday by five goals to two. lit beautiful weather and on a dry ground the teams were enabled to present a swiftly moving exhibition ol the code, which lert the issue in doubt till the final quarter of an hour, when two successive efforts made the visitors’ lead secure. . "While the Taranaki men were fairly beaten on the day, they were not overwhelmed, and the honours were contended in an admirable spirit of sportsmanship, striking evidence oi which was afforded when, the visitors being a man short, the home association filled the gap with a player Gardiner, who, incidentally, notched one of the winning goals. The teams took the field as follow:
Taranaki. —Hartles (goal), Betteridge and Bear© (backs), Aird, McKay, Stewart (half-backs), Morgan, Moloney. Ereakley, Hill, Campbell (forwards). Wanganui.—Martin (goal), Fyfe, Langslow (backs), Davidson, Gilbert, Clapham (half-backs), Gardiner, McLay, Heath, Dick, Jamieson (forwards). Facing the sun in the opening session, Taranaki promptly had the visitors on the defensive, and following a corner Aird shot just over the bar. In ensuing assaults, Morgan, Moloney and Campbell sent the ball behind, and a shot by Hill went wide. Two unsuccessful shots for Wanganui by Gardiner were followed by a Taranaki advance, in which Campbell tested Martin. It was not till the spell was well advanced that a fine shot by Heath beat the home goalie, who was temporarily dazzled by the sun. Just belore half-time Morgan, Moloney, and Ereakly swept up to the goal mouth, but Freakley was unable to penetrate, and the spell ended with the score : Wanganui 1 Taranaki 0
Early in the second spell McKay found "Hurtles in position;, and Aird, with Morgan, went to the other end, where the Wanganui goalkeeper was tried in turn, but the visitors’ score was augmented when Hartles went out to stop two charging forwards and fell as Dick’s shot went through. A misunderstanding between the goalie and his backs occurred shortly after, and Heath with an open goal had no difficulty in registering his second goal. 'Vith the score 3to nil against them, Taranaki forced a corner, which was well placed bv Morgan and allowed Freakley to head into the net. Another bid by the Taranaki forward line occasioned a hectic few moments to Martin, who finally could not get to a hard shot by Hill, and the scores showed: Wanganui 3, Taranaki 2. Two further goals annexed for Wanganui by Gardiner and Dick respectively put the issue beyond doubt, and time was signalled with the scores : Wanganui 5 Taraanki 2
Mr G. Mitchell was the referee. As a curtain raiser to the soccer game, teams representing the Hawera and New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Clubs respectively tried conclusions in an exhibition oi Rugby. In this game the ranks of the borne team were augmented by two men supplied by the visitors, and, with that assistance the local representatives ran out the winners by nine points to five. Seagar . pened the score with a long run for a try between the posts, but was unable to convert, and shortly, after he received a knock which kept him out of the game for a considerable period, durine/ which Rarkliurst notched a try which” lord converted for the northern team. Tries by Net-man and Newell accounted for the remainder of the tally, but as consolation for the defeat the northerners were entertained subsequently at dinner. Mr. W. Pine made a 'capable referee during the game, which caused much amusement among players and spectators alike.
VISITORS ENTERTAINED. The visitors were the guests of the Taranaki Association at dinner at the Royal Hotel, and also at a social held during the evening in the Foresters’ Hall. A gathering of about 50 lined the tables at the' latter assembly. Mr. H. B.
