ALLEGED FRAUD.
TWO CHARGES PREFER RE R. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.! NAPIER, June 1. The story of a ovcll-dressd Englishman’s alleged .efforts to obtain from a well-known Hawke’s Bay resident a considerable sum of money by false representations was unfolded when Colin Coryrton appeared on remand, ic'harged with obtaining from Ellen 'Caroline Lowry, of Okawa, at Rotorua on April 5, the sum of £3OO by false pretences by falsely representing that he had a letter of credit to the extent of £IOOO at the National Bank of Nerw Zealnd at. Nelson. He was further charged with, on March 27 at Whangareii, obtaining from David Wyllie a Roll's Royee car Valued at £9BO by means of a false pretence that he had a letter of credit for £IOOO on Lloyds’ Bank, London.
Tn reference to 'the first charge Mrs. Lowry, in evidence, said that the accused ait Rotorua on April 4 said the police would take action .against him unless he could pay £250 to Parr and BlomfieUl, of Auckland, by noon Ithe following day. Coryton assured her that he had a letter of credit for £IOOO at Nelson, Next morning he Said lie had a cable from his sister in London stating that the money would be sentas soon as the banks opened 'after the Easter holidays. On the 'strength of these assurances witness advanced £.300. On the 'following Wednesday the bank manager told witness i'halt no money -had arrived from London, and witness told 'the manager to hold the cheque. The accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. The heading of the second charge was adjourned to June 15.
