THE EAST COUNTRY.
BRINGING IT BACK. WORK OF MR BRUCE LEVY. Speaking at the last meeting of the Strasaord Chamber of Commerce, Me 4. B. Richards referred to the great amount of work being done by -Vrr. Bruce Levy in the direction of bringing the East country back to profit. It was difficult to keep pace with Mr Levy, '.vim was exceedingly active, both, in body and mind. In addition to tihifas pasture investigation, the sympathy of Mr B. C. Aston, the chemist of the Department of Agriculture, had .been secured, and he thought lie could render some service by carrying out a geological and chemical tsoii survey in the district.
Mr Richards remarked! that the increased prices for cattle and wool would have a great effect in l-e-eistablishiing prosperity in Stratford’s bach country. This country needed to have cattle on it, and if they had a series of years like the oast season it would be found that peop.te would take pains to improve the East country. Mr. P. Thomson said the East cou.iitry had had troublous times in the past, but the development of the coalfields. the prospects of striking oil, and the prospect of winning lime andi other minerals might yet mean that the district would prove the Cinderella of Taranaki.
Mr. W. L. Kennedy .said he had oome into personal con tacit- with (Mr. Levy and was. convinced that he was the right man in the right place. His methods were being copied by the farmera concerned. Already a .great imiprovenruit could be noticed, in- the district.— “Post. ”
