BOV SCOUTS’ ASSOCIATION. On Tuesday evening a fully represented meeting -of . local residents assem. Ided in the public the occasion being the presentation of badges won by Ihe members of the Boy Scouts’ movement. Air S. J. Tidsw-ell, chairman of the 'Scouts ’ Committee, presided and in his opening remark's gave a hc'artv welcome to 'Commissioner Mr -F. W. -Horner. Mr Horner made an inspection of 'the Scoitts and Cubs and commented favourably regarding the smart appearance of the boys. The Commissioner then proceeded -to present the badges to the members -who had earned them and in doing so said .that 'the number of badges to bo presented was a sure indication that- the boys had 'been diligent in their work to give sueli proof of their efficiency. He was sure 'that such training would be reflected in the life and work of the boys in their home life. The progress that had been .made in the

short time -of fifteen months was remarkable and the parade of boys before them had necessarily put in much hard study ancl practice to acquire the knowledge requisite to obtain .the Vari--1 uus badges. He would like to thank the instructors and examiners for the splendid work they had put in and for the results achieved. The Commission, or referred to the splendid services of Air N. C. Cowie, Scoutmaster, and declared the community was indebted to him for his painstaking efficient and yeoman service in the training of the boys. Lastly, 's'aid the Commissioner, lie must congratulate -the committee for the splendid work (Tone bv it and he thought the people should be proud of the work done The results testified that, there (was no -slackness or want ofinterest in (the whole -district.

The Commissioner then presented the badges of King Scout to Troop Leader H. Bell, Patrol Leader Fergus Richter, and sec-oinl ißert- Phillips. Mr Horner congratulated the recipients on having attained to such honours. There were several other boys in the troop who would receive their Kino: Scout badges at, an early date. Service stars were presented to -eight cub's and most of the Scouts. The following boys received

1 aligns, some of -them as many as ten: Gordon 'Main, Fergus Richter, 11. Phillips. Jack Cooper, E. Phillips, D. Quinn, W. Quinn, J, Quinn, E. Cooper. 11. Smcaton, 11. 8011, N. Qiiinn. . The badges won by IBert -Phillips, one of the King Scouts, were: First-class, cyclist, ambulance, athletes, horseman’s, dairy, man’s, swimmers, signallers, all round cord and King ‘Scout.

M r *Co\vio. Scoutmaster, then presented a gold medal donated l>v (Mr J. Spavin, Harwera, to Patrol Leader Fergus Richter. This medal was 'for the buy making the nfosit progress during the first twelve months.

Mr Tidswell, chairman, then acknowledged two cups, one presented by Mrs Reg., Phillips for annual competition between the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, according to rules and regulations to be laid down by the captain of the Gii] Guides and the Scoutmasters. Master's Bert and Ernie Phillips also donated a cup to be called the Phillips Bros.’ Challenge ‘Cup for competition amongst members of the Boy Scouts in Red Gross work. These boys will be leaving the district very soon, and their thoughtfulness and generous hearted. impulses are much appreciated by Hie people generally and the Boy Scout's in particular. Mr W. Shepherd thereafter directed tlie 'boys in a display of .first aid work and it was quite evident his tuition in ambulance work lm,] fallen on good ground.

The evening was filled in with games and other sort's of amusements common to Scout* parades and the ladies supplied supper. The Girl Guides under Captain Miss Ruth Hawken were in attendance and took a prominent part in the proceedings.
