MANAIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) VALEDICTORY, On Tuesday evening about 90 residents of Alanaia ana district paid a surprise visit to the residence of Mr. E. Long, to bid farewell and make a presentation to one of the most popular young ladies of the district in the person of Miss Maggie Long, who is leaving Alanaia to taxe up probationary, duties on the New Plymouth hospital nursing staff. Visitom from all parts of .South Taranaki were present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent in progressive euchre and a splendid programme of vocal and musical items, which were contributed by Aiisses C. Vine and McNeally and Alessrs McCormack, J. Ale Donald, S. Blair, and J. A: G. Cosgrove. |Aliss Long played the accompaniments. During the evening Air. William Duggan, chairman for the social, referred to the loss sustained by Alanaia by the departure of Aliss Long, referring in eulogistic, terms to her splendid work in connection with all public functions. The speaker emphasised Aliss Long’s good qualities, and,' being born in Alanaia and educated in the district, every citizen who knew her was proud of her. She was a credit to her parents, who would miss her very much. The speaker mentioned that the guest of the evening had entered into a very noble profession, and each, and everyone present was proud of her decision to help the sick. In conclusion, Mr. Duggan, on behalf of all present, extended liis heartiest congratulations and wished her every success in her new sphere, and also voiced the sentiment that Aliss Long would more than uphold the prestige of the New Plymouth hospital nursing staff. ■ Mr. S. Blair, on behalf of th© visitors. in a few well-chosen remarks, presented Aliss Long with a handsome writing cabinet. Other speakers who referred to the high esteem in which 'Aliss Long was held were Alessrs J. A. G. Cosgrove, F. Alourie, J. Ale Donald, A. J. Gamlin, A. Atitehell, and J. AY'alsh. Aliss Long feelingly responded to the many kind words of the various speakers, thanking one and all for the very handsome present which she had received. Three rousing cheers were then given for the departing guest. A splendid supper was provided by the ‘ladies. Airs. E. Long won the ladies’ prize for the euchre tournament, and Air. A. J. Gamlin the men’s trophy. A splendid evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne’’ and. “For she’s a jolly good fellow.”
