ALLEGED FAILURE TO' ACCOUNT

Algernon James Body, aged 56, was charged in the Police Court with failing to account fo-r £lO 4s 6d, the funds of the Southern Cross Insurance Company. Accused was remanded.
THEFT OF MONEY ALLEGED. AUCKLAND, May 30. A charge of stealing a sum of money, the funds of the Public Trust Office', was preferred against an employee in that office, 23 yeans of age, in the Police Court to-day. Accused was remanded and his name ordered to be suppressed. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED BLACKMAIL. HAMILTON, May 30’. A charge of black mail was heard in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Outhbert Sidney Wihyman, a lorry driver, being charged with attempting to extort money from his former employer, Henry Langguth, of Rotorua, by athreatening letter accusing Langguth of arranging with Whyman ' for the burning of a truck. Whyman, in his statement to the police, had repeated the accusation against Langguth, alleging the latter had promised him £SO for burning the truck which Langguth said was well insured. Langguth, in his evidence, gave a complete denial. He said lie- had not knowm the amount of the insurance as the policy w-as held by a Wellington firm under a hire purchase agreement. He called witnesses who testified that Whyman had indicated the fire was accidental. Whyman, -who was committed for trial, is a middle-aged married man. Bail w'-a-s allowed.
