BIG WORKS PROPOSED.
NEW TUNNELS AND ROADS

WELLINGTON, May 30. A commission has tor more than a year been investigating means of access to the eastern and western suburbs, cut oft ironi the main part of the city by bills rising from 500 to 700 feet-. The commission lias now presented a report making recommendations which will cost three-quarters of a million to carry out. They include the construction of a tram and tratiic tunnel through the eastern hill to the suburb of Kilbirnie, 2217 feet in length, with new roads to connect at an expense of £317,000 for the main works alone.
On the other side of the city, a new road across the hill is proposed, the widening of Tinakori Road all the way to Karori cemetery, and. another road with a tunnel of 500 feet to connect Aro Street with Tinakori Road. These works would cost £114,000. In addition the purchase of the existing Kelburn tram is recommended, with a view to duplicating it in order to provide increased traffic. As an alternative the construction of a cable tram from a point in Willis Street to the. same tei minus as the Kelinixn tram is suggested. at a cost which was not stated.
