ABORTIVE NEGOTIATIONS

IN COOKS’ STRIKE.

SEAMEN HOLD ALOOF TWENTY SHirS NOW IDLE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Received 10.15 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, May 30. In 'addition to the Canberra the shipowners have new decided to pay, off t'he crew of the Katooinba, which has just arrived from Fremantle. It has a crew of 182, making twenty vessels with an aggregate tonnage of 87,000 idle through the marine cooks’ strike.

The Waterside Workers’ Union had high hopes for -a settlement on the basis of the compromise proposed by Mr Tudeiiopc, and the failure of the negotiations throws -the onus back on (Mr Tddchopo, who has been .asked -to attend a meeting of the Trades Union Council and the maritime workers at Trades Hall, Melbourne to-mor-row.

The Newcastle, Victorian and South Australian seamen held mass meetings and agreed, by resolution, to hold aloof from -the strike. Each condemned the action of Jacob Johnson, general president., for -adopting the role of -dictator on the cooks’ strike.

‘The New South Whies branch held a stroniy meeting and decided upon a non-committal attitude.

The shipowners are convinced that John'son tried to involve the seamen, probably at the instignation of the cooks and the attempt, ignoinin-ously failed.

WATERS! DERiS WITHDRAW FROM NEGOTIATIONS.

NO OTHER DEVELOPMENT.

MELBOURNE, May 29

Alter a (special meeting the shipowners announced that several of the Waterside. Workers’ Federation’s questions had been considered, but .so far as the owners were concerned there were no developments.

It is stated that the waterside r-s have now withdrawn from the negotiations with the owners, leaving the matter in the hands of Mr. Tudehope, secretary of the Cooks’ Union. The owners, however, determined not to negotiate with Mr. Tudehope until the cooks resume work. The crew of the steamer Canberra have been paid oil'. indicating that there is little likelihood of a settlement.
