TRACK WORK AT ELLERSLIE

Cold and showery weather prevailed at Edlerslie this morning for training operations. Nevertheless there was a large attendance of spectators to witness the work. No. 1 grass track, one trestle out,' was used lor galloping and hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper. The steeplechase course was also available and there were a number of interesting schooling tasks over the big fences. The going was heavier than it has yet been on No. 1 grass. The first to work were Royal Tea and Tliursby, who. jumped away at the five furlongs post and ran the distance in 1.8 2-5. Rloyal Tea slipped when running the first furlong and was nearly down, but at the finish he was a shade in front of Thursby. Parfait Amour did strong work, but was not timed. Corinax started off over a round in company with Piet, and after passing the six furlong post he was joined by The Thorn. Piet pulled out between the four and three furlong post and Corinax finished up lengths ahead of The Thorn. He completed the distance in 2Q 4-5, the last seven furlongs being run in 1. 38 4-5.
King Emerald sprinted home from the half mile post in 54 1-5, alter Lomint and Cynthia had had set- out over a round. They kept together throughout the journey, which they completed in 1 59 1-5, the last seven furlongs' being covered in 1 37-4-5. It was a good gallop. Both were going exceptionally well. Scot Free was sent over a round and completed the journey in 2.3 4-5. Master Doon (Holland) and Storm Fiend (Tit-o) ran seven furlongs in 1.37, finishing together. Importer and Kara-mu went a round, which they covei’ed in 1.55 4-5, the former having a shade the better of it at the finish.
Dave, Judge’s Pox, and Captain Gazeley hopped off at the five furlongs post. Dave and Judge’s Box finishing together well in front of Captain Gazeley, the time being 1.8 4-5, Llewellyn and Lord Guy were timed to run the last six furlongs of their work in 1.26 2-5.
Whakarite was not hurried to traverse five furlongs in 1.12 2-5.
Nucleus and Kilburn were associates in a run from the six furlongs post, the time being 1.24 4-5. They finished together. Bluespear and Killute covered seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5, Manly, Mountain Guide, and Sunny Morn finished in that order over six furlongs, which took 1.241-5. Manly went well.
Pompeius and Star of the East ran a mile in 1.56; the former finished well in front.
Tuki and Town Bank were timed to run the last seven furlongs of their work in 1.42. They finished on terms.
Kauri Park, Odin, and Clockwork were companions over a round, running the distance in 2.5 3-5, the last mile taking 1.56. The jumpers Vexatious (Mcßrearty) and Mount Marta (Jarvis) were sent over four hurdles on the course proper. Mount Marta fell at the last and injured his back, with the result that lie had to be destroyed. Vexatious, timed from the first hurdle till negotiation- the last hurdle, took 1.16.
Mister Gamp (A. McDonald), Aberfeldy (Tilson), Mia Bella (Mcßae), Royal Form, and Pai Ana (Savage) were sent over five hurdles on the course proper and finished in that order. Mister Gamp and Aberfeldy were leaders for the greater portion of the way and gave a good display. Maunga (Griffiths) was allotted a similar task, and he was not hurried at any stage. He gave a good and safe exhibition of jumping. Quincoma (Henderson), Archeno (Garrett), and Adjuster (Sharkey) were sent over Four hurdles on the course proper. Adjuster fell at the last, the same obstacle a.s Mount Marta came to grief at. Archeno and Quincoma were in front for most of the way, but the former made a faulty jump at the last hurdle and Quincoma' was a shade in front at the finish. The time for the four hurdles was 1.11. Miss Alma started out over five hurdles on the course proper, but baulked at the second and lost her rider. She was not further persevered with
Red Fuchsia (Baker) and Peneus (A. McDonald) set out over four hurdles. The former got away in front, but Peneus took charge as they came across the top, and was leading at the last hurdle, where he fell, hut neither horse nor rider was injured. Time, 1.18.
HAWERA TRACK NOTES AND NEWS.
(By “Limited.”) This morning broke fine and all important work on the racecourse- was performed before the rain fell. The outside of the course proper was open for Otaki engaged horses. G a snapper and Royal Lover were companions in a gallop over six furongs-, the pair accomplishing a- leal good work-out, with Royal Lover a half a length to the good at the- finish, in 1.21 2-5.
Bisox and Glengariff went together from the seven furlong post. Bisox made the pace, which was not fast, and beat Glengariff by a length at the finish in 1.40.
Paitonu was given a couple of rounds of the sand track at half pace. No fault could be found with Paitonu’.s condition and be should run a great race next Saturday. J. Barry, who was successful on Paitonu at- Hawera and Wanganui will again have the mount at Otaki.
Wliys-ogne, w-hp is to take part in the hurde events was given his pace work on the sand track. Whysogne ran quite a creditable- race at Wanganui and- will benefit by the experience.
' W. Pine worked a couple of youngsters on the two-year-old track and Troilus- on the sand. Troilus will most probably compete at the Hawke’s Bay fixture, next month. Royal Mint is keeping sound and will be given another run during the winter months.
W. Pine has leased a fine' looking three-year-old filly by BisogneSolemn which promises well. Sovena and Fermanagh have- been turned out for a- -spell. Denier is back again in his old quarters in great condition to start preparatory work. Eka is another mare that has finished her racing career and is to be retired to the matron’s paddock. Mr. Ash. her owner, has arranged to have •her mated with Niggar Minstrel this coming season Polyphemus recovered from his knee injury sufficiently to warrant- sending him to Auckland and he was shipped north this morning under R. Morrison’s care. ' Gasnapper, Whysogne, Paitonu. Bisox, Royal Lover and Glengariff will leave by Thursday’s mail train for Otaki.
