MT. EGMONT ALPINE CLUB.

THE 'NEXT TR AMP. The Mt. Egmont Alpine Club is rapidly increasing in meniDership, and the popularity of the tramping excursions inaugurated by irb have been thoroughly enjoyed by all who nave so far availed themselves of the health-giving pastime. The next tramp is isiet down for Sunday, June 3, and the dlub’s activities will be directed to the country at the back of Whakamara. A mute has been mapped out revering a distance of 10 mii!e*s through some of the most interesting bush and hill country in Taranaki, and members are assured of an outing that will prove a very pleasant surprise to those not familiar with Taranaki’s hinterland. The tramp will be under the leadership of Mr A. Spragsg, of Hawera., and Air Leu Greenbanke, of Whakamara., lias kindly consented to act, as guide. Owing to the distance and the nature of the country to be traversed, it will be necessary to get an early start and to aet off in one party. Members arcasked to assemble alt Mr Greenbabk’s house, on Mr L. Bremner’.-s (property, at 9.30 a.m. Oars shoufjd proceed to Mokoia. keeping straight on at the store, and. from here the club fingerposts will show the way. Air Greenbank’s house is situated right at the end of the main road out through Whakamara, a distance of 14 miles from Hawera. Cars will leave the Hawera. Post Office at 8.30 a.m. Hawera members- requiring transport must communicate with Mr T. McKenzie, ’phone 2095. by 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2. The bus fare will be about" 3s 6d return. All trampers will find nails essential on this trip, and it shoulVl only be undertaken bv those who are reasonably fit. Others _ not able to take on the main trip will find they can spend a very pleasant time on shorter bush walks, and will also be ‘able to- follow the progress of the main party from a, point neap the cars. The next excursion, .Tune 24, will he a. whiter climb on Alt. Egmiont to Fantih a,m’.s Peak, and Mr Rod Syme will give instruction on climbing under winter conditions, with the. use of the rope and axe. Mr Brian Haybiittle will act as leader on this trip. A large working bee has been 'arranged for next Sunday to commence clearing the track mid scrub for the oroposed ski track. Mr G. Hunter, of Stratford, has .selected a. site which provides a run of 37 chains' very shiiltinhPie for ski-iug. The wet weather ha.s delayed nrogresis in clearing thei scrub, but last week saw a. party of twelve enthusiasts turn out to commence the work, which, with the advent of winter must be pushed on with all iposslKe speed before the snow begins to settle.
