MID-WEEK RUGBY.

YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. WINS TO FRASER ROAD AND CITY. The first round of' the mid-week. Rugby competition ended yesterday with two good displays of the game, when Eraser Road boat Whareroa and City beat Ohangai. The former match was won by a good margin, but the latter was very close, only one point separating the scores. CITY (G) v. OHANGAI (5). City went out to Ohangai to fulfil their fixture with the local team and had a good struggle to secure victory. Kicking off with the wind, City pressed from the outset and went close to scoring in the first few minutes. Ohangai cleared and play centred, Hinga being prominent, but Hart, Norris, Clark, ,aud ‘Fraser were together in a good passing rush, which was stopped by good play by Lee, the Ohangai rover, and play went to the corner. City came away with a great dash and went down-field in fine style and just on the line, the Ohangai fullback mulling, allowed Goodger to dash up and score an easy try. The kick failed.

In the second spell City were early on the attack, Bryant, Sutton and Hart being responsible for much good play and Ohangai had to defend strenuously till Hinga, Fisher and Try got away and centred the play. Then Hart, Fraser, Morrissey, and Dykes were associated in a nice concerted movement, the last named, after a good dash, passing to Norris who scored a try in the corner. The kick did not succeed. Then both teams got to work and play went up and downfield in quick succession, but Ohangai, not to be denied, set up a hot 'attack, and through faulty handling by the City backs, O’Shea was enabled to score and J. Lee converted with a fine ldicls. (City hadi generally /thej- advantage thenceforward, but could not score and the match ended City 0, Ohangai 5. Mr. A. E. Spratt was referee.

FRASER ROAD 15—WHAREROA 3.

Playing at Fraser Road, the local team scored a good win over Whareroa. The Roa'd boys kicked off and had the advantage for a time till from a penalty French had a shot ! at goal. Whareroa continued to attack, and had several shots at goal from free kicks, which did riot succeed. Then the Road forwards got to work and went down field in great style and Broughton dashed over to score. No goal folknvea. Whareroa attacked once more and from a forward dash, Ingram .scored, the kick failing. Just afterwards French just failed to score, being pu'shed out at the corner. Fraser Road then pressed and Whareroa were forced on two occasions. Both sides in turn attacked and play veered up and down* field till half-time.

From the outset on the second spell, Fraser Road broke away in a forward rush and neatly scored. Just afterwards in front of the goal Rumball had a shot at .goal and increased the Road 's score. The backs, too, were playing well and passing rushes gave Whareroa a busy time. A kick by Pullen gave the Road an advantage, and from a following move Tawhj went over to score. The kick failed. The Road forwards, Rumball, Tinncy and Broughton leading them, dashed to the line and the last named got across. No goal resulted. Newall then, in a good position, just failed to goal from the field and the Whareroa forwards relieved in great style. But only for a time because Fraser Road came back 'and from a nice movement Whareaitu scored a good try. The kick was good, bu ; t failed. Just after the resumption of play time was called, leaving the score: Fraser Road 15, Whareroa 3. Mr. G. Hurley was referee.
