OKAIAWA.
(From our own correspondent). FARMERS’ UNION. The ordinary monthly meeting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday evening, the president, Mr E. W. Johns, presiding over a good mtetndance of members. The principle business of the evening was the judging of the root crops, which takes place to-day (Tuesday). The sum of £5 was voted for prizes for the Okaiawa competitors in 'the Boys’ and Girls’ Olubs competitions. The delegates to the provincial conference,. Messrs Booth and Betts, gave a verbal report of the proceedings. Two out of the three remits from Okaiawa were carried unanimously, while the third was only, defeated by one vote.
Tlie president, on behalf of the branch, congratulated Mr E. J. Betts upon his election as president of the provincial executive. At the conclusion of the business, an interesting debate took place, the subject being “To plough or not to plough.” The usual arguments for and against were voiced by the members, both sides of the question being ably put. No vote was taken, but the opponents of the plough appeared to he in the majority. NOXIOUS WEEDS.
During the debate at the Farmers’ Union meeting on Friday one member related how he had eradicated a patch of ragwort by using blood and bone manure. Another member expressed the opinion that it was the cows, attracted by the smell of the blood and bone which had done the eradicating.
