GERMAN ELECTIONS
FRENCH OPINIONS.
DR. STRESEMANN REAL VICTOR. EVACUATION OF RHINELAND. .UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATIONUNITED SERVICE.) Received 10.15’ a.m. to-day. PARIS, May tiz. . Commenting on the German elections the “Petit Parisiene” thinks that in spite of the setback to Dr. Stresemann’s People’s Party, the results constitute a victory for the policy of Franco-German rapprochement. The “Petit Journal” concludes that Dr. Stresemann Lg. the real victor, also that the internal policy of the Rieieh will become more difficult, and complicated.
“L’Echo de Paris” forecasts that the first action of the Socialists will be to demand the evacuation of the Rhineland. The paper adds: “The Reichstag just elected is no .novelty; it is merely, a reproduction of the assembly of 1920, which directed the whole campaign for the destruction of the Versailles treaty.”
NATIONALISTS’ DEBACLE. \ , COMMUNIST VOTE INCREASED. LONDON, May 22. Berlin messages report that it is stated semi-ollicially that the Cabinet intends to postpone its resignation until the Reichstag meets about June 12; The Nationalists are aghast at the debacle so far as the party is concerned. and are lamenting the bourgeois disunion. . It is realised that the elections represent a pronounced swing to the Left, but also an equal disunity among the Labourites and Communists, both being sworn enemies of the Socialist ‘traitors.” The increase in the Communist voU s considered most disquieting, 3.200. 00;> electors proclaiming their obedience to Moscow. . . The “Morning Post’s” Berlin correspondent states that it is. indeed fortunate that the Socialists are riot strong enough to form a coalition without the People’s Party, as they might have been unable to resist the replacement of Dr Stresemann. The only possible majority seems to be a good coalition consisting of the People’s Party, Centre Democrats and the Socialists.
