SENTENCES AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, May 14. Several prisoners were sentenced at the Supreme Court to-day. Athol Lynch,, for breaking, entering and theft at Opotiki, received two years’ detention at a Borstal Institute.

Edward Charles Townshend, for bigamy, was sentenced to five years’ hard labour. Joseph O’Keefe, for horse stealing, was senfenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. Gordon Sydney Hayward, for theft of fencing wire at Whangarei, was admitted to probation for twelve months. ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. WELLINGTON, May 14. In the Supreme. Court, before Mr Justice Smith and a. jury of twelvp, Louis Stanley Tremayne is on trial to-day ou a charge' of manslaughter by so driving a motor-van at Masterton on February 18 as to cause the death of Frank Clifford Shackle ton. Mr Macas-sey, for th© Crown, said that deceased was driving a lorry on the proper side of. the road at 15 miles an hour, when a van came in the opposite direction, swerved over to the wrong side, and struck deceased’s vehicle and injured four people, of whom Sh-ackleton. died. Li a statement to the police, Tremayne had stated he was approaching Masterton at a speed whcJr he refused to disclose, by the advice of his solicitor. The lorry approached Him on the Till side of the road, at what speed he did not know. The sun got. in hiis eyes and he/took his foot off tine accelerator to reduce, speed', hut the collision occurred almost immediately. "When the sun got in his eyes he felt a trifle dizzy, and while lie had 'his head down the collision occurred, hut Mr MacassCy sugI'Ted to the jury that the accused was momentarily dozing and awoke only when the collision occurred. Evidence was given by Kenneth John Apiin, driver of the lorry, and when cross-examined he- said he did, not remember seeing the van until it wais 20 or 30 varda. away. After .seeing it he did not alter Iris course, but the van did. FOUR YEARS’ REFORMATIVE TREATMENT. AUCKLAND, May 14. John Henry Victor Mansill, solicitor, for stealing £2041 trust funds, was today sentenced by iMr Justice Blair to four years’ detention for reformative treatment. Mansill’s total defalcations were £7169.
