A NEW ERA.

INDUSTRY AND' COMMERCE. REVIEW OE ENGLAND’S LABOUR YEAR. (UNITED PRESS' ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATIONUNITED SERVICE.) . LONDON, May 11. Last, year was industrially the nearest approach to normal since the war, states the annual report of the Ministry of Labour. There was reason to believe that the problems' of 1927 were no longer merely the aftermath of the war., but were the problems of a new industrial and commercial era. The average rate of unempoyment was 9.6, the lowest since 1920. There were three main causes: The substantial carry-over owing to the coal strike, the increased steadiness' of industrial production, also the improvement of export trade in certain directions. AVorking days lost through industrial disputes were the lowest since statistics were first available 40 yeans ago. It was feared that an appreciable number of miners would never regain regular employment. An important feature of 1927 was the interest taken by all sections of. the community in industrial peace. Unemployed benefits paid totalled £36,747,420.
