It now appears probable that the cooks’ union will allow the Australian , council of the unions to take control of the dispute, in which case they* are Lound to abide by the council’s decision. The shipowners are remaining adamant. A meeting of their representatives is being held to-day to finalise the plans to adopt in the_ event of the cooks not resuming immediately. I Importance is attached to a meeting of the cooks' union in Sydney tomorrow. MEN WANT TO EXTEND TIME LIMIT. REQUEST~REFUSED. MELBOURNE, May 13. For the first time since the marine cooks’ trouble began a move towards settlement has been attempted. Mr Tudhope, the union representative, to-day telegraphed the shipowners asking them to extend till Wednesday the time given in which the cooks can man the ships. The owners have refused the request, however. Inter-State importers and others -point out that the men have been given great latitude and the patience of business men is exhausted. Some consider the shipowners have not been firm enough. FEDERAL EYEGUTIVE CRITICISED VOTE OF NO-CONFIDENCE CARRIED. Received 10.45 a.m. to-day. BRISBANE, May 14. .' ' There was considerable criticism of the Federal executive of the cooks’ union on Friday night, owing to its appointment of a. branch secretary without first obtaining the voice of the Brisbane members. Mr. Tudehope, the Federal secretary, who was present, was heckled. Further discussion and condemnation of Federal officials occurred over its conduct of the strike on Federal lighthouse vessels. Finaly a motion of no-confidence in the Federal executive was carried. Mr. Tudehope is returning to Sydney.
