HOCKEY.

KING’S BIRTHDAY FIXTURE. i GOOD SEASON ASSURED. It has been felt for some time in the district that it would be advisable to make an alteration in the tourney held annually on King’s Birthday at Hawera and to widen its scope so as to include play for men as well as ladies. After a, full discussion on Wednesday at a conference of delegates from the various centres, this decision was reached, and the old committee which controlled the ladies’ tourney handed over the direction of the combined, tourney and also the custody of the Catran Cup to a new' body, acting under the aegis of the Taranaki Ladies’ and Men’s Associations. This new body will consist of the old Catran Cup Committee, with the addition of Messrs. H. R. Kemp (Hawera), H. Nodder (Eltham), H. C. Johnson (Stratford) for the Ladies’ Association, and Messrs. O. J. McFadyen (Hawera), Pennington (Eltham), and V. Winter (Manaia), with Miss D. Clement (Ha.Wera) and Mr. Winter (Manaia) as joint honorary secretaries.

Complete arrangements, which have already been begun, will be made, the' ladies playing; full teams and the men five-a-side, and the play will be distributed over four grounds in Hawera. Entries will be received until May 30. Mr. D. Burgess will be manager and Mr. S. J. Catran honorary treasurer.

Indications already are that there will be a number of teams from outside of Taranaki. Wanganui players are making every effort to take part, while other districts are quite likely to be represented.

The history of the tourney is interesting, dating as it does back to 1913, for the benefit of the ladies, hut run by a committee quite' apart from the association. It has always been very popular, has attracted a large entry of ladies’ teams, and has been marked, bv a high standard of play that has always inflected the. greatest credit on Mie various clubs.
