CHANNEL COLLISION.
OCCURS IN DENSE FOG. GREEK STEAMER SINKS RAPIDLY. (UNITER PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (UNITED SERVICE.) LONDON, May 5. “The fog in the Channel was likepea soup, ’ ’ says a sailor on the Bacchus. “Before, we knew it we bad rammed the-Pa-fa-lios amidships. She was loaded with iron ore and sank in less than two minutes. The crew on her -deck were flung into the water, but the remander who were below had no chance. The captain, and mate died from injuries due to the collision. ’ ’ Those drowned include five brothers and two nephews of the owner. The Bacchus arrived at Portland towed stern; first. Apparently the Greek steamer sank in three minutes. Ten Greeks were drowned, including the captain and chief officer. Two others died after rescue at sea. The owners say that 22 were aboard the vessel.
The destroyer -Salmon towed* three lifeboats and a dinghy into Portland with 45 members of> the crews of both vessels.
